A towering mantis, a giant locust, and a pair of enormous beetles! Kokoro, creator of those awe-inspiring robotic dinosaurs, invites you to explore the natural science of the amazing insect world in this awesome exhibition. In addition to the huge robotic creatures, you can examine specimens from the RMSC's collection of 5200 mounted insects. A selection of actual live specimens will also be on display, compliments of Ward's Natural Science. A "Bee Hive" eight feet tall will delight young children who can come inside and have fun finding out about honeybee life.

Russian Icons in the Age of the Romanovs

Tradition in Transition: Russian Icons from the Age of the Romanovs brings together 43 icons that span 300 years of Romanov rule (1613-1918). These sacred images range from humble wooden icons from the peasant class to luxurious examples embellished with gold, pearls and precious jewels. On tour for the first time ever, they come from three major private collections, including that of heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presented as part of the community collaboration Across Borders Rochester.

Artisan Works features the Evolution of Ross Rider’s Wooden Model A Ford

For over a decade, Artisan Works resident woodworker Ross Rider has masterfully engineered and carved sculptures that immortalize everyday objects. Rider’s sculptural tributes compare the intricate architecture of the carved work to the industrially manufactured. His latest project, a Model A Ford, is situated at the “Highway Entrance” of the building, next to the real truck. Viewers can observe Mr. Rider diligently sanding and installing wooden nuts, bolts, and automotive parts during public hours. Exhibit is ongoing; projected completion in 2010.

18th Annual Miniature and Dollhouse Exhibit

More than 70 displays include doll houses of all styles and ages, from Victorian to farm to modern, including Barbie, and all themes, from Country Store to Barnyard to Home Improvement. There will be operating miniature machinery, train layouts, model ships, and military figures. A large collection of Possible Dream Santas and hand-made wooden fire trucks will also be on display. There are many theme room boxes, shadow boxes, unusual and one-of-a-kind dollhouses

Sixty museums worldwide, including George Eastman House, will simultaneously exhibit Heresies starting in October 2008, showcasing the artist’s five decades of photographic work using only electronic media. Museums will display selections from Meyer’s digital gallery of 300,000 images. A goal of the exhibition is to prompt analysis of photography from the perspective of its constant technological development and social impact.

Organized by Nathan Lyons, this unique collaboration between George Eastman House, the Memorial Art Gallery, Visual Studies Workshop, the International Center for Photography, and the Grey Art Gallery will be the most extensive presentation of John Wood’s work to date, encompassing the full range of his productive career from the late-1950s to the present, in more than 210 works. This comprehensive study of Wood’s work will include photographs, prints, drawings, collages, and artist’s books. The Eastman House portion of the exhibition is titled “Quiet Protest.”

This second collaboration between George Eastman House and The Cultural Landscape Foundation looks at twelve important modernist landscapes through the lens of nine photographers. Kidney-shaped pools, boomerang curves, floating cantilevered decks, adventure playgrounds, sculptural Japanese maples, revolutionary new materials, the melding of Modern forms and classic sensibilities. Often experimental and innovative, these gardens and landscapes possess subdued transitions between indoors and outdoors, yet they have often been misunderstood and under appreciated.
